2 tablespoons chana dal (split bengal gram)
1 teaspoon finely chopped garlic
1 teaspoon freshly ground ginger
1 teaspoon freshly ground green chillies or to taste
2 tablespoons finely chopped coriander leaves
1 tablespoon + 1 teaspoon ghee

Soak the dal in warm water for about an hour.
Drain the dal. Combine split urad dal, chana dal, 1 teaspoon ghee, salt and 2 cups of water in a pressure cooker. Pressure cook on high heat for 4 whistles and on low heat for 15 minutes. Let the steam escape before opening the lid of pressure cooker.
Mash the dal slightly using a ladle. Add little water if the dal is too thick and let it boil. Add freshly ground ginger and green chillies.
Heat 1 tablespoon ghee in a pan, add cumin seeds and let them crackle. Add chopped garlic and asafoetida. Saute till garlic turns golden brown in colour. Add this tempering to the dal.
Add chopped coriander leaves.
