Tomato Bhajiya

Tomato Bhajiya is a popular roadside snack sold at Dumas Beach near Surat, Gujarat. In monsoon, people from nearby areas specially go to this place to eat these heavenly delicious bhajiyas! These bhajiyas are unbelievably simple to prepare still incredibly delicious! Try them once, you’ll definitely fall in love with them!!

Ingredients

  1. Ingredients for batter:
  2. 1/2 cup besan (chickpea flour/gram flour)
  3. 1/4 teaspoon carom seeds
  4. A pinch of baking soda
  5. Salt to taste
  6. Ingredients for spice-mix:
  7. 1/2 teaspoon coriander powder
  8. 1/4 teaspoon cumin powder
  9. 1/2 teaspoon red chilli powder
  10. 1/4 teaspoon asafoetida
  11. Salt to taste
  12. Other ingredients:
  13. 2 large tomatoes, cut into slices
  14. 2 tablespoons green chutney
  15. Oil for deep-frying
  16. 1 teaspoon chaat masala

Method

  1. Combine all the ingredients for spice-mix and green chutney in a bowl. Mix well and keep aside.
  2. Place the tomato slices in a dish and spread spice-chutney mix on them with the help of a spoon.
  3. Mix all the ingredients for batter in a separate bowl along with 1/2 cup of water or as required to make a thick batter.
  4. Heat the oil for deep frying. The oil should be medium hot to fry perfect pakoras. To check, drop a bit of batter into the oil, the batter should come up, but not change color right away.
  5. Dip each tomato slice in the besan batter and drop 5-6 slices at a time into the hot oil. Fry until golden brown from both sides. Place on a dish lined with kitchen towel/absorbent paper napkins.
  6. Repeat the same process for the remaining tomato slices.
  7. Sprinkle some chaat masala and serve hot with green chutney.
