No-Fuss Chocolate Cupcakes

Indulgent chocolate cupcakes that are super-easy to prepare. These cupcakes are perfect for Valentine’s Day or any occasion that demands for a sweet treat.

  1. Ingredients for cupcakes:
  2. 1 cup plain flour
  3. 1/3 cup cocoa powder
  4. 3/4 cup sugar
  5. 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  6. 1 teaspoon baking powder
  7. 1 egg
  8. 1/3 cup oil
  9. 1/2 cup milk
  10. 1 teaspoon vanilla essence
  11. Ingredients for Chocolate Buttercream Icing :
  12. 5 tablespoons or 70g unsalted butter
  13. 3/4 cup icing sugar
  14. 2/3 cup cocoa powder
  15. 3/4 cup double cream
  16. 1 teaspoon vanilla essence


  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (170°C for fan ovens). Line muffin tins with cupcake liners.
  2. Combine plain flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking soda and baking powder in a large bowl. Mix well and keep aside.
  3. In separate bowl, beat an egg. Add milk, oil and vanilla essence. Mix until combined.
  4. Combine the egg mixture with the dry ingredients and mix until just combined.
  5. Spoon the prepared batter into cupcake liners until each case is half filled. Bake for 15-20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
  6. In the meanwhile, prepare the chocolate buttercream icing. Melt butter in a saucepan on very low heat. Add icing sugar and cocoa powder; mix well to avoid any lumps. Add double cream and keep stirring on low heat until it's warm and smooth but not boiling. Let it cool to room temperature and turn to thick buttercream which is not runny.
  7. Use a piping bag and metal nozzle to swirl the frosting on top of the cooled cupcakes. Use a star nozzle to get the design shown in the picture.
