Sweet Potato Chaat

Bite-size pieces of sweet potato, fruits and vegetables tossed generously with lemon juice, green chutney and chaat masala. The tanginess of lemon juice and the spicy kick of chaat masala balances the sweetness of sweet potatoes.

Sweet Potato Chaat commonly known as  Shakarkandi ki Chaat is very popular winter street food in North India. Street vendors sell charcoal-grilled sweet potatoes mixed with spices and lemon juice. I have added fruits and cucumber to this chaat to make it colourful & appetizing as well as to create a balance of textures; needless to say, they take the nutritional value of this chaat to the next level.

Ingredients

  1. 2 sweet potatoes
  2. 1 boiled potato
  3. 1 apple
  4. 1 banana
  5. 1 cucumber
  6. 2 tablespoons pomegranate seeds
  7. 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice
  8. 1 teaspoon chaat masala/ sendha namak

Method

  1. Place the sweet potatoes in a pressure cooker and add 2 cups of water. Pressure cook for 3 whistles. Let the steam escape before opening the lid of the pressure cooker. Alternatively, you can steam them in a steamer for about 30 minutes or bake them in an oven at 180degrees Celsius for 30 minutes.
  2. Peel the skin of sweet potatoes and potatoes. Cut them into bite-size pieces.
  3. Cut the apple, banana and cucumber into bite-size pieces.
  4. Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix well.
  5. Serve immediately.

Recipe Tips:

  • Use sendha namak instead of chaat masala if you are preparing to consume it during fasting.
  • Adjust the cooking time according to the size of sweet potatoes. If they are small in size, pressure cook for 2 whistles or cook for lesser time if using any other cooking method like baking or steaming. The sweet potato should be soft but not mushy.
